SECI belonging to the Maccaferri family, launches construction of bioplastics project based on Bio-on technology at the San Quirico production site. Sebiplast s.r.l., controlled by the SECI Group, will carry out the construction of the project at the production site of the sugar factory managed by the operating company of the SECI Group, Sadam S.p.A.
Detailed engineering, purchase of critical equipment, site preparation and demolitions to make the site ready to build the PHA plant will be carried out in the first part of the year. The project with an initial production capacity of 5,000 tons/year is expected to start production in about two years. The design of the project will have possibilities of the expansion of the project to a capacity of 10,000 tons/year along with other industrial activities related to green chemistry, a part of the development and diversification plans of the Group.
Several conventional polymers, currently made with petrochemical processes using hydrocarbons, can be replaced by PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) bioplastics. The PHAs developed by Bio-on offer the same thermo-mechanical properties as of conventional plastics with the advantage of being 100% naturally biodegradable.
Massimo Maccaferri, President of Sadam, said, “We are satisfied to continue this important journey for the implementation of the design phases with the local funding support for the project to realize this important innovation. It is a very positive result for the growth of our Group in the new “green chemistry” sector, with an eco-compatible and eco-sustainable approach”.
Marco Astorri, President of Bio-on S.p.A., commented, “We are proud to realize an important production project together with the Maccaferri Group.” He added, “Bio-on S.p.A. is one of the most important industrial groups in Europe, in the development of high-performance biopolymer business developed by Bio-on and granting of licenses”.
